The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Filled with foot-stomping, toe-tapping songs by Don Schlitz "The Gambler" and a book by Ken Ludwig, this musical adventure is a tale of thrilling escapes, comedy and inspiration for the whole family. Along with his best friend, Huckleberry Finn, and his love interest, Becky Thatcher, the greatest Tom Sawyer exploits are plucked from the book and plopped on the stage. A reduced cast size and running time, as well as potential for tying into English curricula, make this an exemplary choice for theatres that are looking to tour to schools. Perform an entire musical with a pre-recorded score created by a full orchestra of professional musicians. Facilitate cross-curricular learning in class with lessons created by educational theatre experts.

The best entertainment during that dreary first act might well come from the comments made by little kids in the audience who innocently respond to dialogue intended for actors on the stage; the goings-on are so bland that it's hard to believe the same creative team is responsible for the far more engaging second act. Mind you, the second act isn't The Lion King , but at least the much-ballyhooed set designs of Heidi Ettinger begin to justify all the hoopla. And that's not all: There are a few strong songs admirably performed by the talented adults in the show, and the direction of Scott Ellis suddenly displays some signs of life. The book by Ken Ludwig hits the iconic moments of Twain's famous novel, which was never intended as a children's story. So, as family entertainment goes, this Tom Sawyer brings you grave-robbing, attempted murder, actual murder, and a funeral for children thought to be dead, among other nightmarish events.

A Musical in 2 Acts, 14 Scenes. Book by Ken Ludwig, based on the novel of the same name by Mark Twain. Music and Lyrics by Don Schlitz. Directed by Scott Ellis. Mark Twain's classic story comes to exuberant musical life in this Broadway adaptation of America's favourite book.

  1. This Time Tomorrow Lyrics: This time tomorrow, we will have traveled another day / This time tomorrow, we'll be a little farther along our way / We will be wiser.

  2. The production is Dad-friendly lots of male characters with a bluegrass band rather than a full orchestra.

  3. The musical is the story of a fourteen-year-old boy growing up in the heartland of America.
