My Life, My Rules: Stories of 18 Unconventional Careers by Sonia GolaniNot many people have heard of IIM and IIT graduates becoming bestselling writers or chief ministers. The professional career path chosen by many people is as plain as daylight and can be predicted many years into the future. But Sonia Golanis book, My Life, My Rules: Stories of 18 Unconventional Careers, catches the imagination of the reader and provides valuable insights into the inconceivable ways a persons career can proceed. It is a collection of eighteen different stories, each featuring an individual who has dared to walk the less-traversed path.
Amish, a successful corporate employee, ventures into the risky world of fiction writing. Eventually, his Shiva series becomes so successful that he quits his job and becomes a full-time author. Having graduate degrees from prestigious institutions and a doctorate in environmental toxicology, Rahul Ram chose to become a musician instead and played for the famous Indian Ocean rock band. Such stories in this book challenge the common set of decisions that most people make for their futures. These stories show just how unpredictable life can be.

Never run out of good stuff to read! A few did happen on their current careers after working in different fields, like Rashmi Uday Singh, former bureaucrat turned food critic, and Minal Vazirani, business consultant turned art auctioneer. Most, like Nikhil Chinapa and Aditi Govartikar, started the careers they are best known for while in college. What really bothered me though was the lazy reporting and inadequate writing. After a few pages, the pretence is dropped only to be picked up again in the next chapter and the text evolves into actual questions and answers, sometimes with no quotation marks around first person statements.
These and 14 other fascinating stories feature in this book, My Life, My Rules: Stories of 18 Unconventional Careers, exploding every conventional myth about professional choices of a cross section of people. From a Doctorate in Environmental Toxicology who chose to be a musician: Rahul Ram of the Indian Ocean; an alumnus of IIM Calcutta with a successful corporate life who was inspired to write and became one of Indias bestselling authors with the Shiva Trilogy: Amish Tripathi; to a woman who gave up a highly paid and exciting life in advertising to work with an NGO: Ingrid Srinath. This book seeks to inspire every working individual from young professionals to senior level managers to opt out of the rat race, chase their dreams and pursue a profession of their choice for inner happiness, success and a long term career. Sonia Golani has a BA Hons. At school, in Jaipur, she had the distinction of securing a second rank in Rajasthan State in class X Board examination.
