Michael R. Shannon (Author of A Conservative Christians Guidebook for Living in Secular Times)I missed the origin of the conservative rebirth in the US, because I was busy working for the likes of Rep. Jim Wright; Rep. James R. Jones; Rep. Bill Richardson and Rep. Martin Frost to mention but a few. Yet I had every advantage — raised in a good Republican home, became Chairman of the Young Republicans in high school and even helped elect the first Republican Congressman from Dallas. So, like Merle Haggard sang: “That leaves only me to blame, ‘cause Mama tried.”
My journalism career began as an anchorman for an ABC outlet in West Texas, proceeded to the Texas State News Network and concluded as a columnist and editorial writer for the Dallas Morning News. Then I opened my political media firm and worked on issues and elections across the country and in a handful of other nations, too. My writing was for liberal outlets like The Dallas Observer, The Oklahoma Observer and KERA–TV; and Campaigns & Elections magazine, The Arkansas Political Report and Police Labor News.
My work in the radio and television arena has been recognized for both creativity and effectiveness: multiple first place wins in the American Association of Political Consultants Pollie awards; back–to–back first place Silver Microphone awards for radio commercials; a three–time winner of the prestigious Gold statue at the Houston International Film Festival; first place in the Vision Awards for television and consecutive Silver Microphone awards for best campaign.
Then about 2000 it occurred to me that I was electing people who were voting against my best interest. You may recall back in the 60’s, periodically a Buddhist monk would set fire to himself on the streets of Saigon to protest government policies. That’s similar to what I did in 2002 when I burned down the business and started over as a conservative.
So I came back to where I belong. Sure I’m not exactly Whittaker Chambers, but I did consciously decide to rejoin the conservative movement at a considerable sacrifice professionally and personally. And since it took 30 years to do so, a case could be made that I’m a slow decider — but on the other hand I obviously don’t change my ideology like others change their socks.
