Flying to Neverland With Peter Pan by Betty ComdenI received a copy of this book from Edelweiss.Plus in exchange for an honest review.
From early childhood, I have fond memories of listening to an LP record of Mary Martins singing as Peter Pan in the eponymous Broadway show. Never Neverland and Im Flying were favorites, along with I Wont Grow Up. These fond memories are what let this slim, prettily illustrated but fragmentary childrens picture book hang onto a third star. At 36 pages, this book doesnt really tell much of the story of Peter Pan and doesnt really capture much, beyond the lyrics of two of the Broadway shows songs, of the work of lyricists Carolyn Leigh, Mark Charlap, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green, the latter of whom was Phyllis Newmans husband (she wrote the Introduction to this book). One of the disappointments is that the lyrics are split into bracketing fragments (Neverland part 1, Im Flying part 1, Neverland part two, Im Flying, part 2) so, if a child were to listen to the original music, they would not be able to follow along with the printed text, which seems a rather important for a book targeting 4-8 year old children.
This is a very pretty book that was poorly structured.

I Won't Grow Up lyrics. ALL: Yes, Peter! Repeat after me: I won't grow up, I won't grow up I don't want to go to school. I don't want to go to school Just to learn to be a parrot, Just to learn to be a parrot And recite a silly rule. And recite a silly rule If growing up means It would be beneath my dignity to climb a tree, I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up Not me! Not I, Not me! Not me!
